EJC 2006: Favorite Germany defeats Young Czech

Already when entering the field and during the warmups you got impressed by the German size and execution. You could really tell why they’ve played the last four finals in the Junior European Championship. On the other side of the field they were facing an young, unexperienced but hungry Czech Republic.

But already on the first play of the day it showed that this would be a game the Germany would control from the beginning to the end. Two and a half hour later the score board showed 56-0 Germany.

The first play from Germany was a 65 yd run by the impressive runningback Daniel Berg for a TD and the extra point were inbetween the posts by Björn Werner. For the Czech Republic this would be a long day and the guy who would carry them on their backs was the only 16 year old running back Jaroslav Zeman. The normal drive for the Czechs was three and out and on the first punt was returned by the german MVP Sebastian Schönbroich for a 50 yds TD and the score was 14-0 after just a couple of minutes of the game.

The next Czech drive was ended by a moster hit by german Marcus Donner that resulted in a fumble and Berg could once again score a TD on the next play. So after two offensive plays and four minutes the score was 21-0. Later in the quarter the german QB Fabian Schorn found Marcel Kuczynski in the endzone and the first quarter ended 28-0.

In the second quarter the gremans added on to their score another punt return TD by Schönbroich where he fought his way through the czech defense for a 60 yd TD and finally Kevin Oates scored on a run play after the Czech drive ended in a fumble. The only thing the stopped the score from getting any bigger was the Czech safety Filip Supej that made tackles all over the field.

The second half was shortened and 6 minute quarters was played and Germany started to play their second string players. Schönbroich made another long run TD of 70 yds and Christian Shirl ended the scoring for the day and the final result was 56-0.

On the following press conference the Czech HC Fred Armstrong that he still was satisfied how his guys played and fought and that they are here to learn. “It is a young team that we work with and our goal is to have a good team for the 2008 EJC”. Germany looks like favorites toghether with Austria for the group winner but the German HC Michael Treber was not fully satisfied with the performance of the second string and the special teams.
