NFL unterstützt WM 2003

GERMANY TO HOST WORLD CUP OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL;
FRANCE, GERMANY, JAPAN & MEXICO VIE FOR TITLE

American football action in Europe will continue past the exciting NFL Europe League season, as the second IFAF World Cup of American Football comes to Germany this summer.

The Rhein Main region of the country will play host to the NFL-supported event, which features the top amateur players from four participating countries, from July 10-12. Games will be played at Herbert Dröse-Stadium in Hanau and Stadium Berliner Strasse in Wiesbaden.

Defending-champion Japan, which won the 1999 World Cup in Palermo, Italy, returns to tournament play. Other contestants include 1999 silver medallist Mexico, reigning European champion Germany and newcomer France.

“The World Cup of American football is an exciting event that highlights the best of amateur football,” said NFL Senior Vice President DOUG QUINN. “The fans in Germany can look forward to terrific football.”

The tournament will be promoted at Berlin Thunder, Frankfurt Galaxy and Rhein Fire home games throughout the remainder of the NFL Europe season.

“We are very thankful for the National Football League’s crucial support of our tournament,” said ROBERT HUBER, IFAF general secretary. “By staging a successful World Cup, our sport will continue to grow in popularity around the world.”

Schedule for the tournament is as follows:

Thursday, July 10 at Wiesbaden
Semifinal A: Japan v. France (2 pm)
Semifinal B: Germany v. Mexico (6 pm)

Saturday, July 12 at Hanau
Bronze Medal Game: Loser Semifinal A v. Loser Semifinal B (2 pm)
Final: Winner Semifinal A v. Winner Semifinal B (6 pm)
